2nd Grade

Overview

In 2nd grade our team welcomes students into a curriculum rich environment that is rooted in classical principals. We also focus on character development with the Capturing Kids Hearts program. In the classroom students will engage in hands-on activities and discussions in an inclusive environment. Their learning is complemented by activities and field trips which supplement the topics they learn about in the Core Knowledge Sequence. Some of the fun activities that 2nd graders will experience are; Greek Day, Fire Safety visits, field trips to the Joyous Chinese Culture Center and the Olympic/ParaOlympic museum, just to name a few!


  • Language Arts: Comprehension and Discussion of Read-Alouds, Drama, and Poetry and Informational Text

  • Reading: Phonics, Reading Comprehension, Drama, and Poetry, Nonfiction and Informational Text

  • Writing: Narrative Writing, Informative/Explanatory Writing, Persuasive Writing (Opinion), Spelling, Parts of Speech and Sentence Structure, Capitalization and Punctuation

  • World History and Geography: Early Asian Civilizations, India, China, Modern Japanese Civilization, The Ancient Greek Civilization

  • American History: American Government: The Constitution, The War of 1812,Westward Expansion, Pioneers Head West, Native Americans, The Civil War, Immigration and Citizenship

  • Mathematics: Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number and Operations in Base Ten, Measurement and Data, Geometry

  • Science: Properties of Matter, Organisms and Their Habitats, Exploring Land and Water, Electricity and Magnetism, The Human Body

As well as Poetry, Sayings and Phrases, Visual Arts, and Music

The Core Knowledge Sequence is a detailed outline of specific content and skills to be taught in language arts, history, geography, mathematics, science, and the fine arts. As the core of a school’s curriculum, it is intended to provide a coherent, content specific foundation of learning, while allowing flexibility to meet local needs.

Alysia Smit

Teacher, Team Lead

Hello! My name is Alysia Padilla and this is my fourth year at RMCA. I am so excited to begin another amazing year at this school. I graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with my Bachelors in Elementary Education with an endorsement in ESL. I have lived in Colorado Springs most of my life, and I am originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico. When I am not at school, I love being outdoors, drawing, watching football (Go Broncos!) and spending time with my family. I am also excited to be coaching our middle school cheer team this year! I am looking forward to a great year!

Bailey Coulahan

Hello! My name is Bailey Coulahan. This will be my 7th year of teaching, and my fourth year here at RMCA. I truly love being a part of the RMCA family. I graduated from University of Colorado, Colorado Springs with my Bachelors in Elementary Education and an emphasis in English. I have been married to my husband for almost 6 years now and we are proud parents to our 5-year-old son, Kyler, and our 6-month-old daughter, Marley. In our free time, we enjoy hiking and snowboarding in the mountains. I absolutely love teaching and being with kids. I can't wait for this school year to start...I have a feeling it's going to be the best one yet!

Kalene Theis

Hello everyone! My name is Kalene Theis and this is my first year at RMCA, but my 6th year of teaching. I graduated in 2017 from UCCS with my Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Spanish. I taught Spanish for one year, then first grade for 4 years. I have lived in Colorado Springs for most of my life and I don't think I could ever leave! I have 3 wonderful kiddos of my own- a 4 year old and 2 year-old twins. They are the best! In my spare time, I love to hike, run, read, and spend time with my kids, family and friends. My favorite thing to teach is reading, and I love seeing kiddos grow and succeed throughout the year. I am so excited to be here at RMCA, and to be teaching 2nd graders!

Shannon St. John

Teacher Assistant (K-3)

Hello, my name is Shannon St.John and I am so excited to be a part of the RMCA family! I moved to Colorado in 1994 and after attending college out-of-state, I decided to move back to this glorious state in 2000! I have a BS in Community and Commercial Recreation and working with children has always been a passion of mine! My husband and I married in 2011 and have 2 amazing sons, who also attend RMCA. I love coffee, cooking, crafting and most of all spending quality time with my family!

Lisa Robbins

Teacher Assistant

Hello, My name is Lisa Robbins. I started at RMCA in the Fall of 2020 as a substitute teacher. I then moved over to 1st grade as a teacher’s aide during the 2021 school year and have been there ever since. I love working with first graders as they’re learning to read and grow in their education. My husband, Justin, and I celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary in August 2024. We have two wonderful boys; both attend RMCA. I enjoy coffee, Jane Eyre, & spending time with my friends and family.

Sarah MacLean

Teacher Assistant (Activities)

I am a first grade teacher assistant here at RMCA. This is my 8th year working at RMCA as a teacher's assistant. I have my RN license, and did private duty nursing with pediatrics and now volunteer as a nurse when needed. I love working at RMCA and have been blessed to work at the school my girls have attended since kindergarten. I love spending time with my family (husband and 2 teenage daughters). We love to play board games, go mini golfing, camping, traveling and enjoy spending time together. I was born in California but have lived here for most of my life. I love being able to be a part of the education of the first graders here at RMCA. It has been such a joy to get to know all the students that have been in the classrooms I've worked in and watch them grow from year to year.
