Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books is a program available only for 5th graders that encourages children to read a
variety of good books by outstanding authors of children’s literature. The list consists of forty books
from many different genres. Included are books that are historical, fiction, humor, science fiction,
adventure, mystery, fantasy, and realistic fiction. Teams from all over the city participate. Students
are encouraged to read as many of the forty books as possible. For more information you may visit

When:
● Tuesday Afternoons 3:30pm - 4:30pm (Starting September 23rd) in the Library.
Our meetings are dedicated to spending time reading the books from the list, and holding “mock
battles” to practice getting ready for competitions
Cost:
$30 paid at the RMCA Shop (non-refundable: covers materials, tee shirt and end of year pizza party)
Competitions:
Participation in Battle of the Books is a year long commitment. Students who participate will have
a goal to read at least half the books from the Battle of the Books list. Teams are selected based on
attendance, participation, attitude, and how many books are read.

We will have 3 competitions:● One RMCA competition (all participants) for 4th and 5th grade students● One district competition--half day (selected teams)● One regional competition--full day (selected teams)

**Students who attend district and regional competitions will miss a day or half a day of school.Selected students will receive a permission slip to attend the district and regional competitions.
