Supporting Our Military-Connected Students

We understand that military-connected students may face unique academic, social, and emotional challenges as they transition between schools and communities. Our goal is to provide the support, resources, and welcoming environment they need to feel successful and connected.
-
Support Academic Transitions: Help staff understand and address the academic requirements and planning challenges students may experience when transitioning between different schools and curricula.
-
Encourage Participation: Whenever possible, provide flexibility and support for students who may have missed traditional registration periods or opportunities to participate in sports, clubs, and other extracurricular activities due to a move.
-
Recognize the Impact of Transitions: Understand that every military-connected student may be leaving behind friends, teachers, and established support networks. Some students may also be adjusting to having a parent away from home due to deployment.
-
Provide Resources and Guidance: Offer resources, guidance, and individualized support to help students transition smoothly, stay engaged, and maintain academic success despite frequent relocations.
-
Create a Welcoming Community: Foster a warm, inclusive, and supportive school environment where military-connected students and their families feel valued, welcomed, and connected to the school community.

Role of the School Military Liaison

The School Military Liaison (SML) is a dedicated D49 staff member who serves as a trusted resource and advocate for military-connected students and families, including those connected to active duty, Reserve, and veteran service.
The SML helps families navigate the enrollment process, welcomes students to their new school, and provides support as they adjust to a new school environment and community. When needed, the SML also connects families with helpful school and community resources.
In addition, the SML supports students with academic planning, including class scheduling, credit transfers, and ensuring students remain on track to meet graduation requirements despite school transitions and relocations.
The SML works closely with the District Military Student & Family Liaison and military liaisons from surrounding military installations to coordinate resources and support. Through these partnerships, our goal is to provide every military-connected student and family with a smooth transition, consistent support, and a strong sense of belonging within our school community.

The Peterson Space Force Base School Liaison Program Manager (SLPM) serves as the primary point of contact for PreK–12th grade educational matters, helping military families smoothly transition into local school districts, private education, or homeschooling setups.
